🎯 Purpose

The Independent Appeals Board (IAB) ensures fairness, transparency, and impartiality in the review of all academic and disciplinary appeals at the European Institute for Medical Studies (EIMS).
It operates in accordance with the EIMS QA Policy V02 (Section 4.6 – Appeals and Redress Procedures) and supports the principles of student-centred learning and institutional accountability.


βš–οΈ Composition

The IAB is composed of members who are independent from teaching or assessment duties related to the appellant’s case:

  • 1 External Expert (Member and Chair) β€“ appointed annually by the Academic Director.

  • 1 QA Working Group Member β€“ not directly involved in the teaching, assessment, or administration of the case.

  • 1 Student Representative β€“ nominated yearly by the Student Council.

  • Administrative Officer (Secretary, non-voting) β€“ responsible for documentation and communication.


🧾 Scope of Appeals

Students may submit an appeal concerning:

  • Academic results or grading procedures;

  • Disciplinary decisions;

  • Procedural fairness or breaches of institutional policy.

Appeals must be submitted within 10 working days from the official communication of results or decisions.


🧭 Procedure
  1. Step 1 – Submission
    Complete the official Appeal Form and submit it via Moodle or email ocompliance@eims.edu.mt .

  2. Step 2 – Acknowledgement
    A written confirmation of receipt is sent within 3 working days.

  3. Step 3 – Review by the IAB
    The Independent Appeals Board reviews the case within 10 working days, ensuring impartial evaluation.

  4. Step 4 – Decision and Communication
    A written decision, outlining findings and any recommendations, is issued within 15 working days and archived confidentially.

  5. Step 5 – Annual Reporting
    The IAB submits an annual summary report (without personal data) to the Academic Board for quality enhancement purposes.

All appeals are treated in strict confidence. Only authorised personnel within the Independent Appeals Board and QA Office have access to case documentation. Data are stored securely in the institutional QA Archive in line with GDPR.
